Stress is a common cause of anxiety, which can rope its victims into taking psychotropic medicines for relief.[1] However, as many anxiolytics are highly addictive (Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, etc.), it isn’t the best road to take.1 Instead, many doctors prescribe psychotherapy, which can help you manage your stress without the use of medicine, or combined with a small dose.1 However, it takes time to develop the tools you need to manage your stress and anxiety—the main downfall of therapy.1

Our ability to return to a calm state is based on the realization that negative emotions and stressful lifestyles are common life occurrences.1 Knowing that, you can learn how to expect it and deal with it.1 Here are five tips to practice that can help relieve some stress outside of the therapist’s office:

  1. Practice a Form of Self-Calming Once or Twice a Day. At first, it seems like a burden and you may not be successful when you try to put your mind to rest for just a few minutes.1 However, if you stick with it, you will learn. It’s like brushing your teeth.1 No one thinks twice about spending a couple minutes brushing, and after a while, you won’t think twice about spending a couple minutes practicing self-calming behaviors.1 Self-relaxation and meditation practice can lead you to understanding how to calm your negative emotions in situations where you need to do so quickly.1 Calming your emotions allows you to use the tools learned in therapy. It’s a win-win.
  2. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff. If it’s not a life-or-death issue, then it isn’t worth your worrying.1 For example, you hit traffic on your way to work and are going to be running a little behind. Instead of getting all riled up and stressed out, think “ click Is this a matter of life or death?1 No, it’s not. Aggressive driving and road rage can quickly escalate you to a situation where your safety is a concern, and would you really want to lose your life over running late to work?1 Take a deep breath and think positive.1 Some don’t have a job to go to everyday. You do, and things happen. The chances of you losing your job over being a little late when you’re always on time are slim. It’s not the end of the world, so don’t sweat it.1

It is difficult not to take things personally when it seems that those closest to us are constantly pushing our buttons.1 However, usually it’s a result of stress.1 Other people are stressed, too. Although this doesn’t make it okay for them to push you until you explode, think about the reality of the situation and how they struggle with regulating their emotions, too.1 We always take out our feelings on the ones we love most.1

If you are constantly beating yourself up or blaming others for mistakes, you are only adding to your stress.1 You’re a work in progress, and you will make mistakes. So will everyone else. Have compassion for yourself and others when mistakes are made.1 It’s not the end of the world, and we learn from them to grow stronger in the future.1
