TMS Therapy at Wellington Retreat
A Non-Drug Depression Therapy that is Proven Safe and Effective Across a Broad Range of Treatment Resistance
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. TMS is typically used when other depression treatments haven’t been effective.
How it works
During a TMS session, an electromagnetic coil is placed against your scalp near your forehead. The electromagnet painlessly delivers a magnetic pulse that stimulates nerve cells in the region of your brain involved in mood control and depression. And it may activate regions of the brain that have decreased activity in people with depression.
Though the biology of why rTMS works isn’t completely understood, the stimulation appears to affect how this part of the brain is working, which in turn seems to ease depression symptoms and improve mood.
Treatment for depression involves delivering repetitive magnetic pulses, so it’s called repetitive TMS or rTMS.
TMS requires no sedation or anesthesia. Patients walk in, receive treatment and can resume their daily activities afterward. No side effects such as weight gain, sedation, sexual side effects, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, increased anxiety, agitation or cognitive changes such as memory and concentration problems occur with TMS. The most common side effect is mild discomfort at the treatment site which usually resolves within a few treatments.
During each 40-minute treatment, patients may talk with the specially trained TMS assistant, watch movies, listen to music or read. The doctor assesses the patient daily. Throughout the treatment, specialized depression rating scales are performed to monitor progress.
Insurance & Payment
Insurance companies determine eligibility for TMS on an individual basis. The initial evaluation for TMS therapy usually is covered by insurances.
